In 2003, Japanese scientists extracted a special nutrient—Fucoxanthin—from brown algae. It is a yellow-orange pigment found in brown seaweed such as kelp, kombu, and wakame, and is a unique type of carotenoid specific to marine organisms. Recent clinical studies have shown that it helps prevent the onset of metabolic syndrome (Miyashita, 2009).
In 2005, fucoxanthin was found to activate UCP1 (Uncoupling Protein 1), burn fat, and accelerate metabolism, earning it the title of a “future fat-burning star.”
UCP1 is a protein in mitochondria responsible for heat production in cells and clearing peroxides.
